Adjusting Your Glasses for an Optimal Fit

Many of us have experienced this before: your new glasses arrive in the post, you impatiently tear open the packaging like it's Christmas and try them on at once. There's only one problem, and it has nothing to do with getting used to the new glasses. Every time you move, the frame either slips off your nose or is too tight and presses against your ears. You can quickly fix this, simply by adjusting the glasses. However, only 2 out of 3 types of frames can be adjusted with this method. These are either models with metal temples or plastic frames with an integrated metal insert. You can see the metal insert simply by holding the frame against the light. To adjust the glasses, you should bend the temples at the exact point where they touch the ear so that the glasses stay in place:

1. Hold the temples at the point where they touch the ear between thumb and forefinger and bend the temple over your thumb with the other hand.
2. Do the same for the other side and you have adjusted temples.
3. If the glasses are a little bent because you sat on them or for some other reason the temples are in different directions, this can be easily remedied with the metal frame by bending the glasses in the opposite direction until the desired result is achieved.
But be careful! As already mentioned, these little tricks don’t work for one type of frame: plastic frames that don’t have a metal insert in the temples. You can bend this type of frame as much as you like but you won't like the result because you're more likely to break them than adjust them. Other supposed home remedies don't work either: hair dryers, microwaves, kettles or dishwashers... nothing, nada, niente. Even in the wok, the glasses won't shrink or get tighter. All you’ll get for your effort is a broken pair of glasses and another visit to the optician. Best of all, check out the video below to see how optician Phil adjusts his glasses.
